How To Create Nursing Drug Cards

By Deanne Shepard

Most of the nursing students are using a drug card to know and learn how most of the drugs are administered and used. They also learn dosage and common side effects of the drugs used. Although most of the drug cards are purchased, almost all nursing students are required to create their own cards. This is a helpful way for them to understand better and remember a certain detail and statistics.

Once you create a medical card, you always have to speak with your teacher and gather some information appropriate for your project. In making nursing drug cards, basic data must be applied. However, there are teachers who would require their students to gather additional data that others do not. Once your teacher explains some important requirements, you also have to make a list of the details you should include.

You also need to gather some materials and supplies that are important to make your cards. You have to prepare a stack of note pads. Your instructor will give you instruction on the appropriate size and quantity that you will use for the nursing cards. Once you have some plans, you need to jot them down using a pencil. This way, you can simply erase or change some details if necessary.

You will also need a marker or even a highlighter. You can use different colors to make a color coded card. You may color every information with a certain color you want. You must also gather textbooks and professional resources that may be used for the project and to obtain certain details.

You may also write all the generic or trade names for every drug on the note card. This information includes the correct pronunciations. However, it is not so important to color the information. You just need to use the color that you like or even use a black color. Flip each card and write all important details at the back.

You may write again the codes at the top portion of the cards. Write all the data or statistics in a neat, tidy and clean manner. You can also refer a certain requirements coming from your teacher. The most common details are the drug classifications, dosage, common side effects, therapeutic effects, drug actions and the nursing implications.

You may color this portion with any color you like. You can use the colors that may mark a certain data. Just for an example, the word effect, will be colored with orange. It depends on you, on making it effective, once you will be going to memorize it. You can also use a marker in making an outline in each section.

You should also continue jotting down all the required medicines. If your teacher will not provide you the information you needed, then you can also conduct an assessment to the patients. This way, you will be able to learn the specific type of medicine for them. Of course, you will be guided by a professional physician when performing an assessment.

You should study all the details you have gathered. Much better if you will memorize the words. You can also check yourself if you are already knowledgeable about the data you have gathered. This way, you can measure your knowledge about your project.
