The major requirements are a bachelor degree, dental degree, experience, licensure, and certification. A bachelor degree is necessary because most dental schools require applicants to be holders of a degree.

Completing an undergraduate degree takes 2 to 3 years in most cases. Admission into dental schools does not require one to have any pre-dental major. However, having coursework in biology and chemistry is an added advantage. One gets equipped with the right knowledge by the coursework so that they are not marveled by dentistry school. More understanding about admission into dental schools can be gained by joining student dental association.

The dentistry school is where most training for dentists occur. Admission into the schools is competitive and only the best candidates are selected. Students are admitted basing on many factors including how they excel in the Dental Admission Test, DAT. The DAT test is meant to measure scientific knowledge, intuition, and academic capacity. Other things that may be considered when selecting candidates include performance in interviews, letters of recommendation, and grade of averages.

Dental school takes four years, but can be longer depending on the state. Normally one of the two equivalent degrees is awarded, that is, Doctor of Dental Medicine or Doctor of Dental Surgery. The coursework during the first two years of study gives more emphasis on laboratory and classroom studies in dental and health sciences. The sciences may include periodontics, oral pathology, pharmacology, radiology, orthodontics, and dental anesthesia.

Students are engaged in more clinical practice than lab and classroom work in the last two years. Patients are allocated to students to be diagnosed and treated by them. However, students are supervised closely by a licensed specialist. The end of training in general dentistry ends after certification. At that level most people go into the market to look for employment.

Those who are willing can however continue with training to become specialized in a given area of dentistry. Some of the sub-specialties in which one can train include periodontology, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, dental public health, endodontics, and prosthodontics among others. It takes between 2 to 4 years to finish any other sub-specialties named above. Separate certification is also available for each sub-specialty.

Dentists can get employment almost everywhere. Government and private companies, academic institutions, the military, hospitals, research facilities, clinics are among the places they get employed. Working hours are spent in offices, emergency units, hospitals, and theaters among other places.
