Navicular Syndrome Is Not Something Horse Owners Like Discovering

By Olivia Cross

When you love horses knowing everything about them becomes second nature. There is so much to know and learn about these amazing animals that you will always be learning something that can assist you with training or just understanding these beasts. Sometimes things can happen where your animal struggles to hear and this is called navicular syndrome.

This disease affects the horse's front feet and brings about pain and uncomfortability as there is inflammation and degeneration of the navicular bone. This also can bring about lameness depending on how far the disease is. If you can diagnose the signs quickly you can start with the process in helping your animal feel better.

What generally happens is that the animal is past the stage of any help as the signs weren't clear. Things that you can look out for is long toes, heel pain as well as the horse running on the front of its foot known as a "tiptoe" gait and they may also stumble often. You might also find that the foot might be lame on the left on day and then on the right the next.

Knowing the signs will help you to make changes like not working the animal on a hard surface or even the circle as this will lead to pain and cause the feet to change shape. Once you start the treatment you might find that there is not a single treatment that works, this is due to there being other factors that can affect the horse, their age, weight and strength. Things can also happen relatively fast and this will leave the horse lame quiet quickly.

Things that can contribute to this disease are conformational defects on the horse. These include upright, narrow, small feet, downhill build, long toes and low heels as well as upright feet pasterns. Having these defects will put pressure on the navicular bone, cause the tendons and ligaments to pull and therefore causing strain and degeneration even when the animal is just standing.

If your beast has this certain type of syndrome then it is best to treat it with the right amount of exercise so that it is not over or under using the muscles, ligaments or tendons. This needs to also be done at a slow pace things like taking long walks or swimming can help. Try avoiding any heavy, fast pace work as this can cause pain and suffering which you will want to avoid.

Having someone to enjoy your free time with is always nice, but when you have an animal that you need to love and that loves you is even better. In this way you need them and they need you, Thus, looking after them and making sure they have everything they need is so much more rewarding for you both.

Having a beast as a pet is always amazing for anyone. They are there not only to assist you with your troubles but are great workers to. They are powerful beasts and are made to be busy so it is essential to look after your animal with all the right things. In this way they will look after you too.
